And I was a voracious little reader. How could this have escaped me? However, Fitzhugh also wrote The Long Summer, which focuses on Harriet and Beth Ellen one summer a few years after Harriet the Spy took place. Also very lovely and insightful, although not nearly as popular.<br />Jenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04163728540160219294noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8407679229975998493.post-50968800214133284692012-12-10T09:55:02.233-07:002012-12-10T09:55:02.233-07:00I also was very influenced by Harriet the Spy as a...I also was very influenced by Harriet the Spy as a girl. Carried a notebook around for months, etc. Recently, I re-read the book with my 10-year-old son, a quiet and introspective kid, and wasn't sure how he'd receive it. Well, he loved it and begged for the follow-up, written years later by someone else and not nearly as good as the first. And I enjoyed reading both immensely. Especially the original, which has much for even an adult reader--it's insightful to human nature, and very funny, and really, presents what is still a great and memorable character in Harriet. Enjoyed your post very much, a thoughtful perspective.Mary Vensel Whitehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01553185765882617010noreply@blogger.com
