Today, we briefly turn our attention away from books to salute the winners of the recent Military Photographer of the Year competition. Below, you'll find just a few of the outstanding winners from the thousands of entries in the 2011 MILPHOG (as we liked to call it when I was in the Army). I spent my career as a photojournalist in the U.S. Army, but I never came close to the art and emotion found in these images. All photos were taken by servicemembers and were not posed or electronically manipulated in any way. There are more than a thousand stories in each of them. (

DeleteDavid, i must admit being a bit overwhelmed by finding you and this post on the military photos of the year, heavy duty, and welcome home, from where ever your were in the U.S. Army; i was a 71Q20, one of the few things i still remember, in the army it was information specialist (if Navy would be journalist, during my 3 years minus a six month drop i served as a combat correspondent and photojournalist in Vietnam, still having those negatives and a few i've printed mounted and framed museum quality; i'll try to post a couple on your site
