Welcome to Trailer Park Tuesday, a showcase of new book trailers and, in a few cases, previews of book-related movies.
The trailer for the paperback release of Kathleen Kent's novel The Outcasts reminds us of that saying: "Never bring a knife to a gunfight." The simple (but beautifully-filmed) 30-second video sets up a clear tension between two characters: a man and a woman face off across a creek somewhere in the American frontier. There's no dialogue and very little action (apart from the brandishing of a blade and the click of a gun-cock), but it makes me want to pick up Kent's novel to find out how we got to this streamside duel. That sumptuous cover design, echoed in the trailer, goes a long way toward pulling me into the novel, too. You can read the Publishers Weekly review for a relatively spoiler-free plot synopsis, or you can visit Kent's website to learn more behind-the-scenes stuff about The Outcasts. Or, better yet, you can head out for uncharted territory with only this book trailer to guide you. Just don't forget to pack your pistol.
